What is the history behind Greenaway Scott? How did it start, where did it start and why did it start?
Greenaway Scott is a boutique commercial practice founded in 2012 by Nigel Greenaway. Nigel wanted to set up a different type of law firm, one which is a business first and foremost, which is run like a business rather than a traditional law firm. The aim was to create a leading corporate and commercial law firm with sector specific expertise in life-science and specialist technology industries. Greenaway Scott therefore was established as a firm which is corporately driven so we can provide quick and precise legal and strategic advice based on a real understanding of our clients business and sector.
What is unique about your business?
We offer something different in that we are specialist, experienced corporate/commercial solicitors (rather than a full service law firm) and we work closely with our clients to provide an “in-house style” legal service, rather than one you only contact when there is a problem. We do not use the conventional charge by the hour pricing structure, we offer clients a fixed fee or a retainer which our clients find particularly beneficial. This means that many of our clients pay a fixed monthly fee allowing them to budget their legal spend ensuring we are available on an ad hoc basis to provide legal support as required. This sort of fee structure allows us to become more involved in our clients business activities on a regular basis so that we can develop a better understanding of the business and any potential issues they may face.

We are strongly defined by our focus on client satisfaction and the provision of specialist, legal and commercially considered advice. Our advisors are commercial and business focused and provide quick, practical, valuable and effective advice. We believe it is important to become a trusted and important part of our clients business so that we can provide valuable advice and solutions when issues arise, and provide strategic input when growth or exit is planned. We always aim to live up to our clients expectations and surpass our own exceptionally high standards.
What was the last big achievement that was celebrated for Greenaway Scott?
Greenaway Scott had a fantastic year in 2017 and towards the end of the year we were extremely pleased to announce that we had acted on more than £100 million worth of deals, putting us high on Experians’s top legal advisor rankings in Wales. Some of the deals which helped us reach this achievement included advising American based healthcare manufacturer Clinical Innovations Inc on their seven figure cross-border acquisition of German Medical specialist Brenner Medical GmbH, and our most recent achievement was advising UK headquartered medical device manufacturer, Flexicare (Group) Limited on their cross-border acquisition of Netherlands based medical supply manufacturer Medisize B.V.
What made you choose your current locations?
Over the past 5 years we have expanded to various locations throughout the UK, including Oxford, London and Swansea. But it has always been our intention for Cardiff to remain as our head office and The Maltings is an ideal base for us. It’s only minutes away from Cardiff city centre, Cardiff Bay and the M4/A48 corridor making it easily accessible for our clients. It’s also a fantastic building, with its industrial background and historic features combined with its very modern interior and office space. We feel this character mixed with a modern approach reflects our business model perfectly.
We have also recently opened an office in Swansea based in the School of Management on Swansea University’s new Bay Campus. The School of Management and the Institute of Life Sciences have dramatically increased the number of specialist fast-growing technology and life science businesses in Swansea and its immediate area, and so this felt like an ideal location for our next office.
What advice do you have for entrepreneurs in Wales looking to start up a business?
Having the right people in your team from the outset can be the difference between success and failure with start-up businesses. Make sure you take on people who share your drive and enthusiasm for your brand and who will work together as a team to grow the business. Equally it is of vital importance to ensure you have a strong legal team behind you to walk you through the basics which could include everything from setting up the company, putting together a partnership / shareholders agreement and protecting your intellectual property rights. When starting a new business many people make the mistake of trying to do everything by themselves to save costs and legal advice is often seen as an unnecessary expense in what is already a costly venture. However getting the right legal framework will undoubtedly save your business time and money in the long run especially if things don’t go exactly to plan.
